Nothing is stopping this machine.
It is the day before the wedding, and we are doing all kinds of things to get ready. Between trips to Kinkos and the laundromat we were still able to eat some food. We are a busy team rightfully so, it is only 3 days till we get married. We are the embodiment of the of the words, go time.
Around 11am, we are driving down Valley Road to make a left on Bloomfield Avenue. On our way to pick up the marriage license, from the Montclair municipal building. I am not going to get into the history of Bloomfield Avenue, but all the reader needs to know is that it is a 4 lane road that goes from Verona all the way to to Newark. It is a not to be thought of as a lightly traveled thoroughfare, it has tons of traffic.
We wait at the light. There is a large bus and some cars in front of us. Seems like everyone is making a left turn on to Bloomfield Avenue. We make the left following the cars in front of us, a relativity normal procedure.
The sound of siren blasts ring out. Motorcycle cop, zips up next to us, fast, like real fast.
"Pull over, up there!"
He then proceeded to pull over the the two cars in front of us as well. Honestly we couldn't be more amused. The wedding in just a few days, so this all has a sense of funny to it.
The motorcycle cops comes up to the window of the car and asks for the license and registration and says, "Did you not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk that literally had to jump back onto the sidewalk?" He sped by the car before hearing our response. He then quickly took to the sidewalk so he could write what what looks to be tickets for all 3 cars.
We just laugh and smile. Fighitng a war we can't win.
Now the second cop shows up and he is the good cop to this good cop bad cop scenario. He parks his cruiser behind us, and joins the police man on the side walk.
So here were are, pulled over on Bloomfield Avenue, with traffic piling up everywhere. An ambulance is screaming at us from behind, it is unable to pass this police state we are stuck in.
The bronze comes back to the car holding a ticket in his hand and says, "Do you know why you were pulled over?"
No.
"You were pulled over because you didn't yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk."
But we were just following the flow of traffic. How can you pull three people over for the same thing?
"If the first person doesn't yield, then it is the responsibility of all cars following that to yield to the driver."
But the officer said the pedestrian had to "jump back on to the sidewalk," are we supposed to yield to people on the side walk?
"Yes. If they are in a crosswalk, you must yield to them."
But they were on the sidewalk according to the other officer.
"To be honest folks I wasn't a witness to the incident. The officer over there is the one issuing out the ticket. I am just here to help him out. Your best bet is if you want to fight the ticket, call the number on the back of the ticket."
A 230 dollar ticket plus points on your license! Needless to say I called my lawyer whom I keep on speed dial, and we have a court date set for November 17th!
You're going to love the Montclair Municipal court judge. If it's the same one from a few years ago, he's a riot. Pay attention, sit up straight, and listen when your name is called. No slackers allowed. And he will also tell you how "additional fines and fees are not my doing, they are courtesy of your (well, former now) Governor. Call his office after you make payments, no crying here".
